Gert Jochems

biography

Belgian photographer Gert Jochems, a member of the VU agency, lives and works between Antwerp and Oostende. He graduated in political and social sciences and international relations at Ghent University and studied photography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent.

In 2002, after working for several years as a freelance photographer for the Flemish newspaper De Morgen, he started setting up long-term projects. Then he started his reportage “on the road” in Siberia, which will be completed by a book, RUS, published in 2005 and a personal exhibition at the Photo Museum in Antwerp.

Then Gert Jochems worked on Dampremie, a suburb of Charleroi in Belgium, which faces a particularly high rate of poverty and unemployment.

Next, he developed a new project around the theme of amateur sex, which will be exhibited at the Foto Museum in Antwerp and will give rise to the book S, published in 2012. Gert Jochems wants to discover what people usually keep to themselves behind closed blinds and curtains. He finds models on dating sites, visits them and photographs them during their sexual experiences.

His work has been exhibited in Hasselt, Antwerp, Breda, Brighton, and Genk, and has been published in numerous magazines.
