Cyril Zannettacci

biography

French photographer, born in 1973, Cyril Zannettacci is based in Paris.

After studying at the school of the French Society of Photography, Cyril Zannettacci began as an assistant: he acquired solid experience in studio techniques and collaborated with world-renowned photographers. After ten years of working for prestigious international magazines, he developed his own photographic style which questions the contemporary world and its changes: the traces of its history, the persistence of its memory, the relationship of the individual to society and his environment, both in his actions and in his representations.

In 2011, he fulfills a young photographer’s dream and carries out his first commission for the daily newspaper Libération, with whom he will collaborate on a regular basis from 2015. With a sensitive eye for political, social or cultural news, without being locked into a single stylistic repertoire, he develops an intense activity of commissioned portraits and reports for the French press (Télérama, L’Obs, Society, etc.) as well as the international press (New-York Times, Washington Post, Vanity Fair, CNN, The Guardian, Der Spiegel, Stern, etc.)..

The deep attention he pays to the reality of situations in the field, his great ability to adapt and the sensitivity of his author’s eye also allow him to put his photographic work at the service of institutions and NGOs, including Medecins du Monde in 2017, for whom he documents the psychological suffering of the Palestinian people in the occupied territories, or more recently, in 2021, Action Against Hunger, which he accompanies to Kenya in order to bear witness to the consequences of climate disruption on an environment where conditions are already extreme.

Regularly published in the press, his work has been exhibited on the Place de l’Hotel de Ville in Paris during the first PhotoClimat Biennial and screened at festivals and cultural events (Printemps photographique de Pomerol, Nuit Blanche, etc.). Winner of the 2022 Caritas Photo Sociale Prize, his work will be exhibited at the Chateau d’Eau in Toulouse at the end of 2022 and will give rise to the publication of his first monograph by Filigranes.

Pension reform: a surge of social conflict

Series | At the beginning of 2023, the government introduced its pension reform project – an extension of the age of legal retirement from 62 to 64 or a prolongation of the contribution period – as non-negotiable. In response to this lack of dialogue with the social members, a wave of strikes spread throughout France.

Kenya, climate change, 2021

series | Cyril Zannettacci went to Kenya, in the Isiolo region, to witness the consequences of climate change in an already extreme environment. Locust invasions, drought, as well as floods have recently increased in the country.

CHAPSA, 2021

Série | The hospital of the street. It is in the heart of a care unit for the homeless that the photographer Cyril Zannettacci witnesses in 2021, the outbreak of the Covid19 epidemic. Located in Nanterre, at the gates of Paris, the Centre d'Hébergement et d'Assistance aux Personnes Sans-Abri (CHAPSA), a unique place in France, welcomes and accompanies homeless people in a care process.

120mm, 2020

Series | For several weeks, when he wasn't working as a reporter, or photographing with a medium format camera the streets of Paris emptied of its inhabitants, Cyril Zannettacci constrained himself to confinement by reducing his gaze to the aim of a 120mm lens.

Empty Paris, 2020

Series | It took several additional days after the speech of the French President, Emmanuel Macron, but the containment measures necessary to fight the Covid-19 outbreak were finally imposed in France and in Paris.

Winner of the Caritas 2022 prize for his work in a homeless shelter during Covid, Cyril Zannettacci is a photojournalist who turns his gaze to the growing precariousness in France. Having worked as a studio photographer, he now works for the press, both on police repression and the psychological suffering of Palestinians in the occupied territories. For Polka, he looks back on his career and on the reportage that earned him the prize for social photography.
