Aka Zidane is a photographic project about Africa today, seen through the prism of the soccer jersey worn daily by thousands of young men and women.
Facing poverty, violence and exile, but also the gentler moments of everyday life, the contrast is striking.
Who are the Ronaldo, Messi and Zidane that photographer Michaël Zumstein has been meeting in Africa for the past 15 years?
By juxtaposing these doubles of world-famous footballers with the ordinary or tragic situations of several of the continent’s countries, the exhibition tells us that other games are being played over there.
Ronaldinho, the Brazilian striker, is in hospital in Bangui where his friend has just died in his arms.
In Libya, Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud is imprisoned before he can embark for Europe.
Under these aliases, and by hijacking the codes of journalistic narrative, “Aka Zidane” gives space and scope to the lives of men and women.
