Malik Nejmi — Dieu va ouvrir la mer
Exhibition from May 18 to June 30, 2023
From 10:00 am to 7:00 pm
Exhibition organized around the book of the same name co-written by Sophie Bava, Malik Nejmi & Bernard Coyault
This exhibition and the book that follows it represent an unprecedented dive into the daily life of the “house churches” founded by Christian migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa in apartments in the outskirts of Rabat.
While privileging the testimonies and the words of the actors concerned, it restores an experience of observation and sketches, from this Moroccan context, an analysis of contemporary African migratory movements as well as the socio-religious and theological reconfigurations of Christianity on the continent.
“Dieu va ouvrir la mer” is the product of a partnership and shared fields between a photographer and two anthropologist researchers, Malik Nejmi , Sophie Bava ( Institute of Research for Development) & Bernard Coyault (EHESS – Institute of African Worlds).
This project was born in Morocco in 2016 around the objects of mobility, religious objects and objects of protection that migrants carry and transport with them, ultimate and spiritual links with their elders.
