Pierre-Elie de Pibrac — Hakanai Sonzai
Exhibition from 5 June to 30 August
Château d’Eau
1 Place Lalanne, 31300 Toulouse
Between December 2019 and August 2020, Pierre-Élie de Pibrac undertook a trip to Japan that would give rise to two series, *Hakanai Sonzai* and *Mono no Aware*. Whilst the use of colour and the chosen subjects may at first glance appear to set them apart, each series must nevertheless be viewed as a mirror image of the other: the expression Hakanai Sonzai means ‘I feel myself to be a fleeting creature’, and the concept of Mono no Aware should be understood as the emotion that grips us when faced with inanimate objects or the transience of nature. He thus delicately highlights the fragility of things and their melancholy; by seeking to capture their essence, he aims to reveal, through the particular, a specifically Japanese aesthetic and collective ideology.
