Tekeli, Kazakhstan, 2004
In the remote mountains of Tian Shan, on the Chinese border, and 5 hours from the largest city in Kazakhstan, the city of Tekeli has experienced all facets of the post-Soviet economy and social dislocation.
Perseverance and struggle are visible on the faces of Tekeli residents. Industrial,
the city is, in essence, a microcosm of the declining economy of an industrial basin, in a post-industrial age; with an especially elderly population that cannot leave, and at the same time, the massive exodus of young people to the big cities.
“Despite unemployment, inadequate pensions, and the growing isolation of these elderly populations, I have found and sought to show the beauty and warmth of a proud population determined to maintain their roots and lifestyle in a place that is considered by many to be the end of the world. »
