The Qadis (“judges” in Arabic), lawyers specialising in the Muslim personal code, play an important role in Mayotte society. Since the island became part of France, the Cadis, who are little-known outside Moroccan society, have formed a special alliance with the French government, which gives them the role of guarantors of justice.
Who are the Cadis? Is there a republican future for the cadis?
Ludovic Carème explored this very special configuration by following the Cadis in their new role as auxiliaries of justice, social mediators and conflict resolvers, a role entrusted to them by the French government.
The series was produced as part of a major national commission, “Radioscopie de la France”, funded by the French Ministry of Culture and managed by the BnF.
