Workers, 1998
The series “Les hommes du chantier” (workers) was initiated by Jacques Nichet, director of the Théâtre National de Toulouse, who asked me to take portraits of workers during the construction of the theater. During my visits, I noticed how much bodies and minds are marked at the end of the day.
For the first time, I set the basis for a “Before/After” problem. Using the double portrait to go to the meeting of time and underline the importance of the photographed moment. I take a first photograph in the morning, while the worker is getting ready to work, and a second at the end of the day, before he leaves his post.
Indissociable by nature, the two snapshots are presented as a mirror reflecting the stigmata of the day’s work and conceptually framing this workday.
