India, 1989-2003
Passionate about India, Franck Ferville has made several trips to different parts of India since the late 1990s. He reported a serie, India 1989-2003, which examines the different community, religious or social aspects of the country.
His photographs are imbued with a permanent duality that characterizes India. On the one hand, the religious presence, sometimes borrowed from devotion, is quickly caught up in the search for profit linked to trade, such as elephant rides, which are very popular activities in this country. On the other hand, the extreme social disparity of the Indians who share the same space, such as those schoolchildren in uniform packed into the rickshaw that takes them to school, while others are set only on the street.
