Biennale d’art contemporain de Lyon
manifesto of fragility – A world of endless promise
exhibitions at Usines Fagor and at Musée Guimet, Lyon (France)
From September 14 to December 31 2022
Works by Munem Wasif are on view in the exhibition Manifesto of fragility: A world of infinite promise as part as the Lyon Biennial of Contemporary Art.
Conceived by the curators Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath as a collective statement authored by 2000 artists and hosted on different locations, the exhibition calls on a community of resilient voices to draft a manifesto for a world that is blamelessly fragile.
In this framework, photographs by Munem Wasif from his various works are exhibited at the usines Fagor and the musée Guimet, developing a poetic narrative entangled between labour, resistance and the economy of jute industry in Bangladesh.
Following his film Machine Matter (2017) and his earlier documentary work on the movement of jute mills workers (2007-2009), Munem Wasif presents his 2nd July 2020 series for which he went back to the factories he had previously visited, while on July 2, 2020, the Bangladesh government issued a notice to close 25 state-owned jute factories, causing 70,000 workers to be laid off.
