“Україна, Ukraine”
Since February 24, Ukraine, attacked by Russia, has courageously put up a front. Geopolis is dedicating its next series of exhibitions from March 31 to May 29 to this tragedy by offering two exhibitions. The first, by Guillaume Herbaut, offers a dive into the contemporary history of Ukraine, which he has been photographing since the early 2000s. The second exhibition, by Laurent van der Stockt, currently in Kiev, documents the current conflict in all its horror.
For the past 20 years, Guillaume Herbaut has been visiting Ukraine every year, a country that has become a landmark in his photographic career. In 2001, from his first moments spent on the Ukrainian territory, the French photographer is directly linked to the country and its history that he explores under different narratives. His work on Ukraine, produced between 2013 and 2022, has just been awarded the prestigious World Press Photo 2022 prize.
“ From Chernobyl to war. Ukraine is a marker in my photographic journey. The history of this country has allowed me to explore different narratives, to break my reference points to finally put myself back in the news and reflect on photojournalism today. From a forgotten war to the images of a conflict destabilizing the world and appearing on the front page of all the newspapers, we discover a people rising up and fighting for their freedom.“
