Ahead of his work on Lula da Silva’s election in November 2022, Brazilian photographer Francisco Proner reveals an iconic image. The photograph highlights the contested arrest of Lula in April 2018. Widely spread on social networks, the photograph crystallizes the moment when Brazil’s current president – surrounded by supporters proclaiming their support for Lula – leaves the headquarters of the metalworkers’ union in São Bernardo to surrender to the federal police.
On January 1rst 2019, Brazil enters a period of tension with the inauguration of a president of the Republic, who himself initiated a reconsideration of the democratic foundations of the country.
During this period of internal mobilization, thousands of Brazilians were forced to leave their country. From afar, they nourished a commitment to the struggle for an upheaval that would restore spring in Brazil.
Today, spring has blossomed. At the source of a wind of freedom and democracy, it holds the promise of a future in the hands of Brazilian people.
