A canary flirting with the trigger of a revolver and ready to take flight at any second, a colony of ladybugs swarming with appetite on a pie crust… in his still lifes, Emmanuel Pierrot almost always tells us stories of movement.
It’s one of his trademarks, one of his favorite motifs.
It was only natural, then, that the photographer should want to go one step further and really animate his images, making them move.
It’s not a question of cinema, video or animation, but rather of a new form, in which movement is articulated through a series of around twenty images which, when looped, suddenly allow him to move from the fixed image, sadly ephemeral by nature, to the infinitely declining sequence!
During the exhibition, the artist plays with the fixed/moving duality in his usual mischievous way, creating visual devices to surprise and amuse the viewer, who can reflect on the ambiguity between the two formats.
For the strength of Emmanuel Pierrot’s work, and what makes his moving images, when viewed as a series, so much more than mere farcical objects, goes far beyond their comic foreground. They are the result of an ongoing questioning of the evolution of the photographic form, and of what enables an image today to find its place in the permanent visual deluge.
