In the Cambrésis region, beet growing has shaped both the work and the landscape.
To mark the 150th anniversary of the Sucrerie d’Escaudœuvres, photographer Amélie Landry and students from the École supérieure d’art et de communication offer a collective reading of this rural landscape.
A territory is never neutral, and we can ask ourselves how the sugar industry, over more than a century, has transformed its immediate environment. After drawing a perimeter around the factory on a map, the students set off to explore its countryside and villages. Above and beyond their argumentative research, it is above all their sensitivity, their desire for images and encounters that give their testimony its strength: pictorial research, portraiture, documentary, poetry of the sensitive, architecture… Borrowing the form of a constellation, this collection depicts a variety of territorial realities. The multiplicity of viewpoints and the singularity of the photographic writing underline the close relationship between this visibly fragile local heritage and a particularly imposing global industry. As part of a residency program initiated by the Communauté d’agglomération de Cambrai and the Ville d’art et d’histoire department.
