Tractor Boys
We are talking about initiation rites, so to speak. The images of this gang of teenagers cheating boredom by driving around in old cars are an expression of an overflow of brute force, of adolescent intensity, of what could be described as the fury of living that comes to find its outlet.
Martin Bogren captures the candour and insubordination of young people playing what they believe to be adult activities that they are not yet and getting drunk on speed at the wheel of tinkered cars in parking lots in the middle of the Swedish countryside. It shows this complex passage to manhood, a mixture of childhood and manly morgue, these friendships and challenges where everyone is measuring and gauging each other, where everyone comes up against each other, be it speeding, girls or challenges.
