Rue des Lombards
Rue des Lombards is Jane Evelyn Atwood’s first photographic reportage, produced in black and white, in a simple, effective and sensitive style. From an encounter with a prostitute in the Rue des Lombards, she discovers a world where everything fascinates her: extraordinary characters, incredible costumes, the way people look at each other. Although the entrance to the building is shabby, the walls filthy and the floor covered with cigarette butts, the desire to know these women better will lead the photographer to share their lives.
For a whole year, she managed to penetrate and immerse herself in their world, spending her evenings and nights photographing them in this brothel. Always present, she works with empathy and respect for the other and in a refusal of the superficial.
If this year Rue des Lombards was decisive in her work as a photographer, it also taught her, as a woman, a lot about human nature. From these fascinating encounters, from this demanding work, was born a deep friendship with Blondine, an extraordinary woman who is still dear to the photographer today.
