Paysages
Gerard Rondeau knows things only by his tenacity to know them. Waiting precedes the acuity of the gaze. Each time he has to deny an acquired vision. Here, we believe that we fix an image that presents itself to us in its immobility, that values and forms appear and disappear until they cancel each other out in a mental image. There the wake of a car rises on the horizon, as in a silent imploring towards three waves of clouds whose foam rolls like a tidal bore.
Henri Gaudin
This exhibition is the story of a life filled with history(ies) and travel, sending us back to large spaces as well as to small interior geographies.
Based on numerous archives, many of which are unpublished, this ensemble includes photographs taken all over the world, in Africa, Eastern Europe, America, Asia, the Middle East, Greenland and, of course, France.
Gérard Rondeau has made surveys and inventories of landscapes: battlefields, revisited monuments, ramparts or fortifications, large expanses, wounded or vacant places, areas in pain, forests, islands and mountains, roots, rubble, abandoned steles, but also urban landscapes, interiors, echoes of modern architecture, etc.
It is a work of memory as well as a work taken on the spot, a singular and personal journey linked to photography, a way of showing rather than (de)showing, a way of referring to beauty and abandonment, to elsewhere and to the imaginary.
