I photographed the women and their daughters, in residence in Vitré, in 2020/2021, during the periods of confinement. The protocol played is similar to shadow theater: The women and their daughters position themselves behind tablecloths and sheets that they bring. Flashes are installed behind them, they improvise and replay their intimate and family gestures. The shooting is done through the fabric, with the models.
While evoking the weft, the thread, the fabric, Ariadne’s thread, the project evolved on shadows that speak to us of cave paintings in the notion of gushing and imprecation. There is an archaic dimension that this mother-daughter relationship represents, knots of transmission, complicity, rivalry, vampirism, but where rationality has no hold, inescapable. Darkness plays with light.
Shadow theatre is also the embodiment of speech, song, and screaming, first used for religious purposes (to evoke the souls of the dead) and exorcism. The stripped-down side of this process puts the body and movement of people into perspective in a straightforward vision. No faces, the postures are archetypal and timeless. The whole thing moves towards a pictorial and tachist vision, a form of renunciation of representation as well.
