Vanuatu, Esperando al cargo, 2005
To the East of Australia, Vanuatu, comprising some 80 islands and better known by its former name of the New Hebrides, has been independent since 1980. The South Island of Tanna is the stronghold of a millenarian and syncretism form of worship: The John Frum cult, symbol of a generous GI who made his appearance during World War II and handed out clothes, beds, and refrigerators, promising to return. Every Friday night, men and women gather to celebrate his awaited return.
