Transition of Power, 2021
Following the events of January 6, 2021, I felt numb witnessing citizens of the United States storm the U.S. Capitol, invading a space that has historically been promoted as a place for democracy.
In the following days, members of the U.S. National Guard were deployed to essentially save the country from its own people. The only reference I had in comparison to scenes of occupation with individuals from the U.S. were photos from my teenage years, when the United States decided to deploy its military to Iraq and Afghanistan as a measure advertised to keep U.S. citizens safe during the early 2000s.
This inauguration was unique not only because the events that transpired in Washington D.C. during the month of January and complications from Covid-19, but also because of the rise of social media and self-reporting over the last four years.
With the combination of limited access, military checkpoints, and lack of individuals celebrating, it looked like an inauguration from a dystopian world. These photos are a result of stepping back to analyze the entire scene from the historical and unique 2021 U.S. Presidential inauguration.
