The Little Dancers, 2017
« The Little Dancers » is part of a series on the theme of childhood, initiated in 2014 during a residency in Aulnay – sous – Bois (93) with the support of the Département de la Seine – Saint – Denis. The series took on its final form in 2017, with a focus on colour, flat areas of colour and body language in increasingly abstract forms. The shots were taken at the Conservatoire de Musique et de Danse, in leisure centres and at the Galion dance centre in Aulnay, which has now disappeared. The young teenage girls are invited to dance and run to the music, against a backdrop of bright orange, golden yellow and red paper, rushing towards the camera with primitive energy. And Dominique Baqué writes: For there is no doubt that they move, they jump, they bow, “against”. Against what? Only they know: against their suffering, their loneliness perhaps, a world they had dreamed of but which fails to match their desire. Untamed, in sublime savagery, they invent their own space and angrily assert that another body is possible.
