Teatro d’Italia : Theater of Italy, 2011
From what point of view did Massimo Siragusa want to depict Italy? Are these landscape photos? Are they “portraits of places”?
Is it an anthropological repertoire without human figures, or almost? Is it an architectural repertoire?
By looking at these images, one by one, we can see that they are – almost all – adapted to theatrical actions. I do not imagine them populated by daily life, but repopulated by different performances.
Theatre in fact plays, in space, the function of a reference to memory: it does not fill space but evokes it, that is, it evokes the event or events from which space is born as space. This evocative energy runs through all the images of Siragusa. Italy is a land of theatres, a land of events which, in the force of their own advent, have dug into the space of their own representation.
