Soviet Sanatoriums, 2018
Oil baths, Radon mineral water massage, thalassotherapy at the edge of the Black Sea are the cure centers’ specialties – also called sanatoriums – in Naftalan, Kolkhida and Tskaltubo, respectively based in Azebadjian and in Georgia. Built from the twenties, these establishments have known during the Soviet era a keen interest and many tourists came from all of the USSR to be healed of several pathologies.
Nowadays, these places keep attracting patients convinced on these treatments’ blessings even if some of them could seem a bit unusual. Many scientific studies led during almost a century, agree on their efficacy and their virtues. Cares are combined with a natural environment suitable to the patients’ welfare. So many reasons to develop this activity to boost the economy of countries left in precariousness after the USSR’s fall. New therapeutics hotels are coming out in Naftalan, or in Azerbajian or in Ureki in Georgia. Besides treatments they also offer entertaining and relaxing services, consistent with European hotel trade standards and with modern and comfortable infrastructures. Nevertheless, some establishments are kept away from the thermal cures and other western spas’ luxury and modernity. They appear like remnants from an ancient time.
