Rana Plaza Collapse : The Cost of Fashion, 2013
On April 24, 2013, in Dhaka, Bangladesh, an 8-story building collapsed, killing more than 1,100 people and injuring 2,500 others. This disaster is one of the worst tragedies in the history of the textile industry. Almost all of the victims worked for five garment factories located in the same eight-story building, the now tragically famous Rana Plaza.
While the textile industry has given a huge boost to Bangladesh’s economy by establishing more than 4,000 garment factories in the country, the Rana Plaza tragedy has revealed to the world’s media the deplorable working conditions imposed in these factories.
Bangladeshis are employed there for a maximum of hours for a minimum wage. The garments made in Bangladesh in dangerous working conditions and for a pittance are then shipped to major Western retailers, generating nearly $20 billion a year for the textile industry.
