Means to the end : gun crime in London, 2008
In recent months the UK has suffered a spate of killings from guns and knifes and the rise in ‘gang’ culture has dominated the news. Despite the arrests and subsequent imprisonment of the Jamaican gangs, the Yardies, some years ago, gun crime in the UK has continued. Emulating their Yardie predecessors, disparate youths are forming gangs and are involved in selling drugs, guns and running prostitution.
Operation Trident is the police task force who respond and investigate gun crimes amongst the black community. Operation Trafalgar deals with other (white) gun crime.
In his eleventh hour, the government announced that this kind of gun culture was a specific black problem and not linked to poverty. He has been by criticised for failing to understand that the disproportionate number of black youths in the criminal justice system is a function of their disproportionate poverty.
