Land of tumors, Naples – Italia, 2018
For more than two centuries, this region was the heart of the “Happy Campania“. A land of Cocagne, with scandalously fertile lands, where everything grew effortlessly and where life seemed sweeter than elsewhere. But times have changed… In recent years, the areas of Naples and Caserte provinces has acquired a new nickname, a terrible one: the “Land of Fire“.
Every year in the spring, as soon as the heat sets in, we see columns of smoke multiplying in the sky, everywhere in the territory, testifying the fact that, somewhere, spontaneously or not, a wild dump is burning spreading into toxic fumes in the air.
Despite the outbreak of the “eco mafia“ scandal in 2000’s and years of local protestation, no one has yet succeed to stem the multiplication of its discharges that pass beyond the control of local authorities and which, in an apparent anarchy, bring together domestic waste, industrial waste or even highly toxic products.
For the local population, consequences are terrible. Chronic illnesses, inexplicable cancers affecting sometimes young children, the inhabitants of this region that is one of the poorest in Italy pay a heavy price for the traffic of waste that crushes people at the same time that it mutilates the landscapes.
