La pesanteur du lieu, 2017
Israel Ariño spent two months at the Domaine de Kerguéhennec in Brittany during an artist’s residency. In the region, it is said that an old house, lost in the domain, only appears at nightfall. He goes in search of it. The night proves to be propitious to revelations and metamorphoses. His eyes gradually get used to the darkness and guess other dimensions, new densities and temporalities, at the limits of rationality.
The gravity of the place is a night walk, a dreamlike wandering. Israel Ariño delivers there a constellation of sensual and mental visions, sentimental perhaps. His dark and velvety photographs give substance to the darkness, invoking and capturing the emergence of things that manifest themselves in the night, beyond the ordinary, in a shattered order of the world. They belong to the universe of the marvellous, like a tale where the supernatural blends with reality. Once upon a time… a dark undergrowth, a strange crystal, frozen antelopes jumping, a breast offered, an astonished owl, a house with shining windows.
The series, imbued with a sense of mystery, opens a perceptive threshold to discoveries, signs and apparitions, leaving the reader suspended, on the edge, on the incessant point of sinking into hallucination.
