Jazz, 1989
“My first photographic loves, a mixture of blue notes, silver grains and incredible encounters. I love jazz, improvisation, musical travel. For three years, I travelled all over France from festival to festival, following this great musical caravan, from a big top in Coutances for Jazz under the apple trees, to the arenas of Vienne under a stormy rain where I made this unforgettable image of Miles.
Coming from the blues, plaintive and languid music, Afro-American melody from the banks of the Mississippi, all in improvisation and syncopated rhythms. First popularized by Dixieland and New Orleans, then moving to the mythical city of New York, Harlem, jazz has evolved without limits, constantly mixing with multiple influences, hip-hop, rock, fusion. Periods follow one another, reflecting the changes in society, from be-bop to hard-bop, from free-jazz to jazz rock. Close to literature, it is an inner music, which allows you to travel without touching the ground! The names that mark the history of jazz are countless, Art Tatum, Louis Armstrong, Errol Garner, Glen Miller, Miles Davis, Monk, Mingus, Parker, Coltrane, Gillespie, Blakey, Evans, Petrucciani, Peterson… the mythical singers, Billy Holliday, Nina Simone Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan… To live jazz is above all to accept an unforeseen journey. »
