Highways, 2023
Photographer Bertrand Carrière’s project is an observation of the contemporary landscape through the lens of a highway network. The freeway as a metaphor for development, consumption, tourism and our dependence on oil. These transit zones, riddled with advertising, graphic and sculptural motifs that often go unnoticed by truckers, reveal the way we carve up and occupy our inter-regional borders, and develop our peri-urban sites, farmland and commercial spaces. Through the ostentatious or anonymous cultural signs that follow one another along the way, Carrière’s photographic captures question the transformations and evolution of the territory, its beauties as well as its dysfunctions.
