Extra-ordinary, 2012
Rip Hopkins went to meet shopkeepers and professionals who have a doorstep.
He envisioned them as superheroes, leading a double life: a public life in which they respond to a mission for society, and an intimate, private, domestic life.
So each person is photographed in a public place and then at home. A double portrait that could show two facets of a relatively normal life, if the subjects were not photographed as movie heroes.
Who has never dreamt that their life was a film, played in front of invisible cameras? Rip Hopkins offered them a chance to play the game. The portraits refer to fetish films.
The result is astonishing. Reality meets fiction. Ordinary lives become extra-ordinary through the play of imagination in action.
