Ethiopia, 2001-2006
Like Peru, Ethiopia is a veritable obsession for Juan Manuel Castro Prieto who has returned there many times. It’s why his photographs, where for the first-time color alternates with black & white, are stripped of exoticism and stereo- types and constitute less a travel diary than a prolonged meditation. Simultaneously precise and symbolic, it looks at a landscape in the grip ambiguous temporality, where a primeval figure incarnated by a silhouette receding away from us, and a diffuse spirituality, dialog with the objects, signs and behaviors of the modern world.
