Entre Fleuve et Rivière, 2018
“Motivated by a deep attention for the sensitive history of landscapes as well as for the human, social or mythological stories that nourish them, photographers Christophe Goussard and Charles-Frédérick Ouellet have chosen to carry out their investigations around the banks of the St. Lawrence River in Quebec and the Adour River in the Basque Country. “Entre fleuve et rivière” is a dialogue between the two photographer’s view of these territories and the immaterial, fictional or poetic traces left by their common history through that of exiled Basque sailors. Fascinated by this history, of which nothing tangible remains, neither descent nor construction, Christophe Goussard has chosen to approach it in total suggestive freedom through a look at the landscapes crisscrossed by these sailors. Photography becomes an allegory of exile, but also of a collective quest. Known for his work in black and white, he uses color here in a misty sfumato, sometimes almost monochrome. There is in these images, the photographer’s feeling towards nature. The rocks emerging from the waters appear as so many chimeric sea monsters and each fragment of land contains the memory of this intense and legendary humanity”.
