De qui aurais-je crainte ?, 2011
With the desire to leave behind the artificial light and richdecoration of studio sets in order to create pictures in naturewithout roads or construction, Raphaël Neal imagined a series built around the colour red. Referring to pagan art, at timesrecalling the aesthetic of Pier Paolo Pasolini or Werner Herzog’s movies, the portraits of models painted in red and the landscape pictures of De qui aurais-je crainte? (Who would I fear?) give us a glimpse of the futile beauty behind a ferocious need for loneliness on the fringes of the modern world.
This series was published as a portfolio co-edited by Editions de l’Oeil and Chez Higgings and a book at Editions du Bec en l’Air, with a text by writer Alice Zeniter. The project also gave rise to an eponymous show, with Raphaël Neal, Alice Zeniter, actor Martin Loizillon et musician MaJiKer. A music video by Florent Marchet, Que font Les Anges (Pias, 2014) also refers to this work.
