Cidade Bolsonaro, 2020
Reporting from Nova Pádua, a small town of Italian settlement in the middle of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in the context of the Brazilian municipal elections in November 2020.
In the 2018 presidential election, far-right President Jair Bolsonaro scored his best national result here: 93% of the vote. The city has earned a nickname for it: “Cidade Bolsonaro.” In this white, prosperous, rural Brazil, the security and reactionary theses continue to be successful.
