Black Sea, Between Chronicle and Fiction, Part 2, 2008
On eight occasions, the British photographer Vanessa Winship visited the shores of the Black Sea. For several months she photographed exclusively in black and white the six coastal countries of Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria, Russia, Ukraine and Georgia. Fishing villages in Romania, monumental buildings from the Stalinist era in Russia, Orthodox believers immersed in prayer in Georgia, women’s elevators in the Ukraine, proud wrestlers in Turkey or donkey carts in Bulgaria – Vanessa Winship always manages to capture images full of melancholy and deep tranquillity. In her portraits she shows people who feel mysteriously invisible. Winship is constantly demonstrating her masterful use of light. In this volume, her photographs come together to form a captivating arc of images of very diverse coastlines which, almost forgotten, are linked by the Black Sea to its great and ancient history.
