Behind the mountain, 2020
When the confinement was decreed, Emmanuel Pierrot was in the Hautes Vosges in the family farm behind the Col de la Croix des Moinats, settled in the warmth with three generations under the same roof. The choice is determined since a few years to have integrated Martine, 92 years old, the “Nonna” suffering from cognitive impairment.
The Covid dimension places a form of gravity. It’s a kind of clan that has organized itself around accompaniment. Martine is the first to contract this damn virus. We stay for 5 weeks totally isolated, life is organized around derision and the evidence of not having abandoned her in an ehpad, her smile radiates to us daily and our presence gives her the strength to hold on. In the meantime, down in the valley, the death toll is increasing and at the exit of the confinement there are some 35 residents whose souls have evaporated in the hill.
Emmanuel’s photographs bear witness to a daily life where generations cross paths and show us that life is the basis of all creation.

Wednesday, we talked about 9, Thursday 11. We wouldn’t believe it. A morbid count about the Cornimont retirement home, where parents are dying far away from their families. Getting out corpses, siliconed coffins, 10 mn cemetery. Then we counted 15, 20 to 21… Thus goes life on the hill of souls.

I think about this photograph of the chair from the series « Les objets de la non convivialité » (Objects of non conviviality) taken at the end of the last century…as a separating prosthesis between oneself and others.

Hospitalization at home is a service managed by the former Gerardmer hospital. We are one of the 30 families who can take advantage of this service for the support of the elderly at home, delivery of protective equipment, medical equipment and coordination of all the teams such as the Siad, nurses and Admr that we are happy to see again after 6 weeks of absence.
