Ahwaz: The Most Polluted City, 2014
“Ahwaz is a city located in southwestern Iran, in the middle of the Khuzestan province of which it is the capital. Stretching in the Tigris plain which forms a basin, not far from the slopes of the Zagros Mountains, it has an elevation of 20 meters above sea level. And while winters are short, mild and relatively dry, summers are long and extremely hot, around 46°. This summer heat helps to retain the polluting fumes associated with an unlimited industrial activity, mainly that of oil refining since it produces most of the country. For several years, Ahwaz has been classified by the WHO as the most polluted city in the world. Sunday August 3, 2014, it is 11:30 am, I get out of the plane. The 47 C° and the small ambient wind dries my eyes, even if no smell of pollution nor any dark veil makes me visible the pollution of the place. It must be said that the problems of society perfectly hide the major ecological concern of this city. »
