Aub Bala “High Water”, 2017
It was in 2009 that the inhabitants of Aub Bala, High Water, a small village in the Afghan province of Bamiyan, saw for the first time how to use skis. A man and a woman working for an international organization had traveled to their village to map the area, known for its stone Buddhas destroyed by the Taliban. Their goal was to find ways to bring in tourists, and to do this they had traveled on skis.
A group of young boys, interested in this new mode of transport, copied their skis by tinkering with wooden boards made of nylon thread and nailed pieces of plastic.
