À côté, 2018-2021
À côté is a photographic approach to the body in the “Almost there”. The body, omnipresent in my work, tends here to reflect on presence through its absence. A real contradiction is created, an in-between. The body is so present that it ends up withdrawing from its environment. It’s almost too much, there without being there. Our environment, however familiar, ends up seeming foreign to us, so inscribed are we in it. The notion of the familiar domestic space as a disquieting strangeness is also present in this work.
These fragmented, de-individualized bodies are set in aseptic interior settings. They are also characters, referents of the image. It is through them that we can affirm photographic subjectivity. The photographed body then becomes a photographic body, devoid of any identity of its own. Characters in a tableau vivant, still life.
The notion of passage, of opening, of off-screen is inscribed in these images by the window, the door, the mirror as attempts to escape. It’s also an “opening onto”, an image that goes beyond the frame. The artificial, posed nature of the bodies and scenery tends towards an absurdity of reality, and in this sense is reminiscent of photographic tableaux.
