25 Trump Street, 2025
Since his second accession to the White House, Donald Trump has seemed particularly attached to the visible demonstration, in the public arena, of the people’s attachment to his elected mandate. It is as if the street, rather than the ballot box, were the key to his legitimacy.
The failure of his bid for the 2020 presidential election had already been followed by the Capitol attack, a traumatic moment when Trump’s supporters felt called upon to contest, by gathering and invading the seat of the institutions, a democratic election whose outcome they did not like.
Back in power, Trump used the traditional ‘Inauguration’ of the presidency in January 2025 to demonstrate the popular enthusiasm for his political programme.
On 14 June, he used the 250th anniversary of the American armed forces to organise a military parade in Washington D.C. (which is not in keeping with any American tradition), on a date that conveniently fell on his own birthday.
