Pieter Ten Hoopen
World Press Photo “Story of The Year” 2019
& 1st award category “Spot News – stories”
“This work is a perfect example of how a subject can be treated in a unique way. Not only because it offers a different aesthetic from what we are used to seeing in photojournalism. But also because we clearly feel the photographer’s intention: the intention to document moments and moments of life that are insufficiently represented.”
Alice Martins, photojournalist and member of the jury WPP 2019
Pieter Ten Hoopen’s award-winning series documents the largest migrant caravan of all time, with nearly 7,000 travellers, including at least 2,300 children, according to UN agencies.
Last October and November, thousands of Central American migrants joined a caravan heading for the US border. “Chartered as part of a grassroots campaign on social media, the caravan left San Pedro Sula, Honduras, on 12 October, soon swelling with refugees from Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala who were fleeing economic conditions, violence or political repression in their countries in the hope of finding a better future.
