VU’ x Action Against Hunger

Ferhat Bouda · Andrew Quilty · Cyril Zannettacci · Catalina Martin-Chico

Action Against Hunger has called upon four photographers from Agence VU’ to bear witness to the effect of climate change on hunger in four regions of the world.

Whether in Chad, Panama, Afghanistan or Kenya, the photographers bring their own style to document the deep link between people and their environment. Their images reveal, beyond the figures and studies, the human reality on the ground: individuals, families, and social groups whose daily lives and food security are durably but silently disrupted by climate change.

This photographic review is part of the associated projects of Nuit Blanche 2021 in Paris. A screening of the images on a giant screen will be organized in the courtyard of Agence VU’ during the night of October 2nd, 2021 (Health pass required).

The exhibition, “Poussières“, accompanies the screening and will be open to the public until October 9th at Galerie VU’.

Andrew Quilty

Afghanistan

For Action Against Hunger, Andrew Quilty traveled to Qala-i Naw, the capital of Afghanistan’s province of Badghis, which, during the great drought of 2018, hosted thousands of climate-displaced persons. While many people are still in “informal” camps today, the drought continues to jeopardize crops, raising fears of food shortages, undernutrition and waterborne diseases.

Ferhat Bouda

Chad

Ferhat Bouda went to Chad to meet families in the Kanem region. For Action Against Hunger, he documented the increasing effects of drought and the violence of water stress in this region of the southern Sahel. Maintaining an agricultural life is a real challenge with the silting up of ouaddis and rivers overflowing their banks, destroying the crops in their path, without filling the water tables.

Cyril Zannettacci

Kenya

In Kenya, Cyril Zannettacci testifies for Action Against Hunger on the aggravation of already extreme living conditions by climate change. In the Isiolo region, locust invasions, droughts and floods have recently increased. Access to drinking water, for both people and livestock, is becoming a real issue, while problems of under-nutrition are appearing, particularly among children.

Catalina Martin-Chico

Panama

For Action Against Hunger, Catalina Martin-Chico went to Eastern Panama, to Bocas del Toro and the surrounding islands, to meet with the Ngöbe community whose daily life has been disrupted by the rising sea level. While fishing areas are getting further and further away, land resources are also suffering from the advancing waters: deforestation is accelerating, some animals are disappearing, and cultivable land is becoming scarce.
