The Dolpo Box
Exhibition from June 4 to September 4, 2022
Musée d’art contemporain de Montélimar
Place Provence, 26200 Montélimar (France)
In resonance with the Présence(s) photographie festival, the Musée d’art contemporain exhibits The Dolpo Box by Frédéric Lecloux.
The Dolpo Box is a box that reappeared around 2013 in a family attic in Belgium. In it were loose thousands of slides that I thought I had destroyed, from my first Asian travels between 1994 and 1999. Nepal, India, Iran, Pakistan, Chinese Turkestan, Tibet, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan… Part of this collection comes from a solitary trip to the ancient kingdom of Dolpo, in the northwest of Nepal, in the spring of 1996. A territory whose name this box soon took.
The exploration of this box was done in several stages.
The first was conducted in 2017 as part of the graduation internship of Florian Tourneux, then a photography student at Saint-Luc in Liege. The second took the form of a subscription proposal initiated in the fall of 2018, now closed. The final stage took place in early 2019. Invited by rn7 to inaugurate its creative residency entitled Les Nouvelles Oubliées, I seized the opportunity to, with the help of the host of this residency, empty this box and look for a meaning in it.
