The closure of the last blast furnace of the Arbed Esch/Belval steel factory in 1997 marked the end of an important era in Luxembourg’s industrial history. The photographic exhibition “Last Fires” at the National Archives in Luxembourg provides an opportunity to revive this historic moment through the eyes of the artist-photographer Yvon Lambert. In August 1997, Yvon Lambert captured the last moments of activity of the blast furnace B, before it was finally shut down. With his series of black and white photographs, a veritable monument to the vanished world of Luxembourg’s blast furnaces and steelworks, Yvon Lambert is preserving this part of the country’s history and heritage from oblivion while paying tribute to the life and work of the men who were involved in it.
