Stéphane Duroy — Stéphane Duroy
Les rencontres de la photographie d’Arles
Exhibition from 1 July to 29 September 2024
Croisière – 65 boulevard Émile Combes 13200 Arles
Stéphane Duroy’s photographs convey the silent crash of a fragmented world and the poetry of disenchantment, before the viewer’s eyes, laden with the weight of absence. For more than forty years, he has criss-crossed Europe and the United States, tracking the tragedies that shaped the twentieth century.
Originally working for the Sipa press agency, he gradually turned away from documentaries to devote himself to building a body of work around four major projects in England, Berlin, Eastern Europe and the United States. Stéphane Duroy has been a member of the VU’ agency since 1986. He takes an uncompromising look at our times, favouring the contemplative over the denunciatory. In 2009, Duroy began tampering with copies of his book Unknown (2007), by adding layers of material, collages of press cuttings, anonymous photographs, paintings and tearing. Destruction for reconstruction. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, he has been making one painting every day.
