‘Proche. Lointain. Incertain.’ brings together three photographic perspectives on the complex relationship between humans and their environment, from the silence of the American plains to the far reaches of the Arctic.
Together, these three narratives map out human fragility, where wandering, whether chosen, forced or inherited, becomes a path to understanding oneself and the world.
This journey through vast, snow-covered lands is echoed in the work of Natalya Saprunova. Through Peuple Boréal, she immerses us in the mystical culture of the cold. Her gaze bears witness to the resilience of the peoples of the North in the face of the dual threat of melting permafrost and the traumas of colonisation and forced sedentarisation, revealing a land that is slipping away.
With Alfie Masoliver, we follow the romantic figure of the Wanderer on the roads of the American West. Inspired by Schubert, his series transposes the metaphysical solitude that is the very essence of the road trip. By capturing traces of civilisation without human presence, the photographer explores the aesthetics of the Sublime: a grandiose and desolate nature that becomes a mirror of our own subjectivity.
Finally, Olivier Laban-Mattei takes us to Greenland with his series Neige noire (Black Snow). He depicts a people in search of their identity, torn between their colonial heritage and dreams of independence. In this fragile landscape, marked by climate change and geopolitical appetites, his photographs convey the tension between social survival and the harshness of a world in flux.
