The ‘Handmade Japan’ exhibition explores Japanese craftsmanship as a living practice, rooted in everyday life and inseparable from Japanese culture. Far from the Western distinction between art and craft, Japan has always celebrated creative gestures that combine beauty, utility and spirituality.
At the heart of the exhibition are works by Pierre-Elie de Pibrac, created during his eight-month immersion in Japan. The museum has chosen to showcase more than a dozen monumental colour photographs, as well as some fifteen black and white prints on mulberry leaf paper handmade by a craftsman in Kyoto. Spread throughout the museum, these works interact with objects from the permanent collection and creations by guest artists. With his deeply human eye, Pierre-Elie de Pibrac captures the discreet elegance of everyday Japanese life, while probing the souls of those who shape it, revealing the intimate and spiritual dimension of craftsmanship.
The pieces on display come from the collection of Felix Tikotin, the museum’s founder, as well as from contemporary craftsmen in Israel and Japan. They cover a wide range of disciplines, including ceramics, textiles, woodwork, calligraphy and mizuhiki.
