Munem Wasif — Salt Water Tears
Festival L’Homme et la Mer
Impasse Jules Guesde, 29730 Guilvinec
From June 1 to September 30, 2022
Munem Wasif went to meet the community of Satkhira in southwest Bangladesh, a region affected by the ravages of climate change. He photographed its inhabitants and collected their testimonies, revealing the numerous problems of water supply and the risks they face on a daily basis. The advance of the sea on the land destroys the crops and pushes the search for drinking water further and further away. It has only brought destruction.
Munem Wasif was awarded the Prix Pictet 2008, which rewards photographers who focus on the theme of sustainable development. This work was produced with the help of the non-governmental organization WaterAid.
“From a sustainable development point of view, the number one priority in the field of water would be to reduce the vulnerability of people and businesses to climate change and ecological disasters (…) These simple people who struggle daily against immense povertý and great misfortune are still living this joyful village life without contributing to change this climate they were fine with, but yet constantly facing this water catastrophe. It is time to take action, to adopt policies and regulations that would reduce this gap between the worst and the best. Water is life, so let there be life. Let’s not make it a tragedy.”
