Martina Bacigalupo — Gulu Real Art Studio
Festival Portrait(s) – 2014
20 rue du Maréchal Foch – 03200 Vichy, France
From the 13th of June to the 31st of August 2014
Within the framework of the second edition of Vichy photographic rendez-vous, focused on the portrait art, Martina Bacigalupo displays her series “Gulu Real Art Studio”. She recycles unusual faceless portraits she found at the Gulu Real Art Studio, Uganda.
Nobody would remember the “Gulu Real Art Studio” if Italian photographer Martina Bacigalupo would not have pushed its door out and discovered there a strange habit. It involves making large portraits of clients, cutting in the printings a rectangle matching administrative photographs format and throwing the remnant. It was precisely this waste that intrigued Martina Bacigalupo, these headless bodies, these radically disembodied images that she recycles and reunites, unwittingly reconstituting the great family of the absent, the ghost community of the inhabitants of Gulu, whose unity can only be rediscovered today through their postures and clothing.
