Jane Evelyn Atwood — Jane Evelyn Atwood et Joan Colom
Les Rencontres d’Arles
Espace croisière – Arles (FRANCE)
From the 2d of July to the 23th of September 2018
Les Rencontres d’Arles exhibits the work of Jane Evelyn Atwood in 1978-79 in Pigalle, a work on transsexuals put in parallel with that of Joan Colom on the Barrio Chino district in Barcelona.
“I photographed the transsexuals in Pigalle as I saw them, but I couldn’t photograph what they are. They have difficult lives because they are ridiculed, feared, ostracized, relegated to the margins of society, but even more so because they are complicated. There is a deep sadness about them, too deep to be captured by a camera, and perhaps too deep to be reached by words. It is an intimate, secret territory, so secret that they themselves do not have complete access to it. »
The book Jane Evelyn Atwood, Pigalle People, 1978 – 1979 was published by Le bec en l’Air in June 2018.
